Rumor: Windows roadmap for 2024

With new leadership at the helm and ex-Windows chief Panos Panay in the rearview mirror, a new Windows roadmap is beginning to take shape under Microsoft’s new Windows & Web Experiences team, which is now leading development on the next major Windows client update, code-named Hudson Valley.

We’ve known for some time that Microsoft is planning to ship a major new release of the Windows platform in 2024 code-named Germanium, which is what Hudson Valley will be based on. So, what’s the low-down on this new Windows roadmap, and what can we expect from the next version of Windows? Here’s everything I know so far.

The new Windows roadmap

We’ll start with the roadmap itself. Under Panay, the Windows org changed up how it intended to ship new versions of Windows. It decided to return to a traditional three-year release cycle for major versions of the Windows platform, supplementing the annual platform release with smaller feature drops every few months instead, known internally as “Moment” updates.

According to my sources, the new Windows bosses are now returning to an annual release cycle for major versions of the Windows platform, meaning Windows is going back to having just one big feature update a year instead of multiple smaller ones throughout. Microsoft may still use Moment updates sparingly, but they will no longer be the primary delivery vehicle for new features going forward.

These changes are said to take effect after Hudson Valley launches in 2024, so I’m still expecting at least one more Moment update for the current version of Windows 11, which sources say will ship in the February or March time frame early next year.

The roadmap for Hudson Valley is also quite interesting. The update is expected to ship on the Germanium platform release, which is set to reach an RTM milestone in April. However, the Hudson Valley update itself won’t be finalized until August, and won’t begin shipping as an update for existing PCs until the September or October timeframe.

Also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 and already a member of windows 11 and was a member of windows 10 under a different name.

Also have a Samsung watch 5, Samsung Series 7 55 inch TV, and a Samsung Galaxy 22 Ultra phone.

And all three of these can get windows 11 and 12 so never out of touch
I keep Windows 10/Pro/32 on a separate HD (a laptop spinner) because I need the 32 bit OS to run "Mah Jongg", my favorite game. That 32 bit Win-10 is great for older computers that are not 64 bit capable.
Essentially there is very little difference between Win-10 and Win-11. Just some Cosmetics.
But, if you like being "Up to Date" then Windows 11 should do the trick. I'm on Windows 11/Pro/64 23H2 right now, and I really like it. I have Auto Updates shut off, so Microsoft doesn't screw this thing up. And I've tweaked and tuned it for maximum efficiency.

Being the Hobbyist that I am, I'm also experimenting with a totally new version of Win-11, called "Optimum 11" that is really much smaller and faster than the one I'm on now. It's here, on this same PC, but on another SSD. I've just not finished installing all my programs yet. Once I've finished that, I could start using that as my Every day OS.
Faster is always better!

Just for grins, I have booted up my PC to "Optimum 11" and I'm running it now, just to make sure this will work.
Obviously, it does.

But, I'll bet you didn't buy your Mah Jongg game in 1990. Eh?
I bought my own Mah Jongg game on a 3.5" Floppy disk, on a Software rack in a newly opened Staples store in 1990.
It will only run on a 32 bit system, and that leaves out Windows 11, which is strictly 64 bit.

But it's OK. Because I have Win-10/Pro/32 set up to look and run just like my Win-11 installs. Should my Win-11 SSD fail, I can just boot up to my Win-10 drive and still read my email, work this forum and also work my photos.

And, , , I have one more drive all set up the same, except the OS is the very new "Optimum 11/Pro/64 V3" (not from MS)
So, my bottom line is, that on this same PC I have three drives (two SSD's and one Spinner) that are all set up the same, so I have immediate backups if one drive should fail. (Heaven Forbid) And all my data is kept on a fourth drive, a 1TB Toshiba spinner, and backed up to several Flash Drives.

I'm too old, and I've seen too many heartbreaking computer failures, to allow myself to get caught with my Backups down.

OH, and in case of a motherboard failure, I do have another desktop PC, a twin to this one, where I could just move my HD's in case I ever needed to do that. In fact, my main SSD, that I'm on now, was originally set up on the other PC and then just moved to this PC. I like to keep my options open. ;)

Cheers Mates!

My latest play thing is: Optimum 11/Pro/64, 23H2, V5.
I downloaded it, burned it to a Flash Drive with Rufus, and installed it to a new Crucial SSD, all in less than a half hour.
To say that it's small and fast is sort of an understatement.
I'm actually running that version of Windows, NOW!
I love it! And NO Problems!

Happy Easter, everybody,

I'm still adding programs to my 24 yr old HP Laptop, running the latest Win-11 from X-Lite.
And, I'm happy to report, that it's just running Grrrrrrrrreat!!! (as Tony the Tiger would say)
There were NO problems with the install or the Activation, and in less than an hour, I was up and running!

I love it when a plan comes together,

FWIW I asked Co=pilot when Windows 12 will be released and it said sometime in the fouth quarter of this yea. If so they are not going to test it like Windows 11 ie. no Insiders.

Somehow, the word "Insider" gives me the chills.

And, if Co-Pilot is anything like Cortana, I wouldn't want it anywhere near my computer.

I absolutely REFUSE to have a camera or microphone on my PC, so I can't be listened in on, or photographed.
