What's new

Oh no!!!!!

I think the good old days have gone for Norton, They used to be just a good old AV and clean up tools, now they sending to many emails selling different things. but, imo still one of the best AV's I am just not sure which way they are heading
I turned off some stuff that was just annoying as hell, now it just sits in the background and hopefully does it's stuff

When I have more time, time that I'm willing to invest, that is, I plan on digging into it to see about turning off the notifications that try to sell me things. I have pared them down greatly, but there are still some there.

For me, I thought Norton Security was a good product.

Unfortunately when it became entwined with LifeLock, it was all downhill (personal opinion).

Thats when I cut it loose.

Windows Security, has worked equally as well, and at a nice cost savings.
Yep - since Lifelock it sends you lots of alarming pop ups. I even had one that said something like - we don't want to upset you but did you know we found your email address on the dark web? Do you want to activate this extra option to scan it. Well yes I was upset - it freaked me out - but ignored it. And no I am not paying for an extra option.

Yes I haven't worked out how to turn off all the notifications yet, but there are less now I changed some setting. I'm still using it as it's worked for me for years and no issues. But now - scaremongering tactics!

They do like to scare people. Of course, their claims could have some merit. That's the disturbing part...

I'm pretty sure I have the deluxe version. It covers 5 computers and isn't all that cheap. (Too lazy to check at the moment!) I'm kind of resistant to input my email addresses for fear that I've been violated!

Yes I think it was when it updated to lifelock it came up with - put your email address here and we check extra things. It was a big change so I didn't think much of it. So when it found a result I didn't know whether to believe it frankly - as they were just wanting me to sign up to the extra options. It has become far too commercial. I paid for AV, now leave me alone!

I remember seeing that on mine at one time, but I don't see it anymore. I wonder what I did to change it. Or maybe I imagined it. My memory seems to be murky on this one...

One thing to look out for as well, this may help @Hazel123 and @CornishRattler if a file or download is quarantined as WS.reputation.1 it probably is not a problem as it means the file has had so few downloads it has not built up a good reputation yet. What I do is remove it from quarantine and drop it into VirusTotal if nothing flags it I assume it is ok. Another badly worded thing from Norton, I am sure it is to scare us.

I stick to classic mode too - simpler. I just ignore it usually and it does it's thing in the background. Useful for manually scanning a received word document eg. Never used to have these pop ups but I do seem to have stopped most of them now. I turned off "special offer notification" in settings.

Bitdefender has a lot of the same issues, I think.
It has 16 modules, and I for one, use 3 of them. :)

I think good internet security needs three things...

1. Good AV
2. Good heuristics.
3. Good firewall (aka, one that blocks everything until I let it through, and remembers my choices).

That's pretty much all that's needed, IMO.

I think it is always there, I never use the My Norton much, I stick to the Classic start page
Advice from experience is always welcome

I used to use the password manager many years ago back in the Internet Explorer days and it worked very well, I just don't need it any more

I also have the password manager but don't use it. I have a different system. (No, not the same password. It's not! Er... they're not.) Anyway, I don't like other things, even software, knowing what my passwords are. I don't even save my important passwords in browsers. You never know!
