Why Windows 12 (probably) isn’t happening in 2024

New leadership and a fragmented platform make for a tough argument for Windows 12 this year.

It’s an open secret at this point that Microsoft is gearing up to ship a significant update for Windows this year that will primarily focus on new AI experiences, much of which will be powered by next-generation silicon from the likes of Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm. This next release, code-named Hudson Valley, is expected to be unveiled in early summer, and begin shipping in the fall.

Because of its significance, there has been some debate around what exactly Microsoft intends to call this next Windows update. Will it be another Windows 11 feature update, or will Microsoft go all out and call it something new like Windows 12? The answer is we don’t yet know, and likely won’t know for sure until Microsoft is ready to take the wraps off Hudson Valley in a handful of months.

This is a topic being discussed not just externally amongst Windows fans and tech enthusiasts, but internally at the company too. There are pros and cons for going either route with branding, and while I’d personally love for Hudson Valley to ship as “Windows 12,” reading the tea leaves, I think this is unlikely. Here's why.

That is a sound article with a lot of common sense. I didn't like the sound of this bit though "The new bosses want to emphasize Windows as a Service........"

Even if it is perhaps supposition. Reading that article - it wouldn't make sense to have a Windows 12 this year. Sounds like they're going to kind of merge Windows 10 and 11. I wonder if they will extend the Windows 10 life? Computers were still being sold with windows 10 on just 2 years ago.

I wonder if they will reduce the tpm requirements for Windows 11 to get more people to switch ,.....

I was surprised there weren't more than 1.5 billion windows users. Considering the world population is 8.1 billion and about 74% of that are adults. Which is about 5 to 6 billion (?) adults.

On the other hand - maybe they will just do what Apple do and bring out a new OS every 1 to years (I think).

All this is confusing to me but then I haven't made chasing the almighty dollar my life's passion.

Windows 10's end-of-support date is October 14, 2025.
Windows 11 v23H2 EOL is Nov 11, 2025 and wasn't W11 to get 24H2in Oct. of this year (2024)?
If so, then would it not be better to upgrade 10 to 11 and extend 11's life until W12 or whatever MS calls it is ready.
