It's the socket we need to worry about.

When considering the financial ramifications of Pluton, it's not just the CPU.
Needing a CPU (with Pluton), is one thing. But, if we also need a new CPU socket... things are going to get expensive.

There's already two Lenovo laptop models coming in May 2022 with Ryzen 6000 series processors. However, there's no mention of the socket.
I have found that the AMD 7000 series will definitely require a new CPU socket, namely, the AM5 socket.

I've also found hints that the AMD 6000 series CPUs, will "drop right into" the AM5 socket.
This doesn't necessarily mean that the 6000 series will ONLY work in an AM5 socket.
Both AMD and Intel have made forward compatible CPUs before.

For example, the AMD Phenom II X4 955, fit both the AM2+ and AM3 socket.

So, for me at least, Pluton is not that big of a concern. The CPU socket however, is a major issue.
If AMD comes out with a Pluton CPU for the AM4 and possibly the AM5 socket as well, we would be looking at $300 - $400 maybe.
But if we need the Pluton CPU and an AM5 socket, we're looking at about $1000, for motherboard, CPU, and RAM (DDR5).

That could definitely cut into our pizza money.

I think if there is a way to make the most money that is what the companies will go for. If it is expensive or awkward I shall just stay on 11 after all it's still fairly new with plenty to play with

FWIW.. I think that MS will not make the Pluton chip mandatory. If it's present then they may make you use it otherwise it's going to be optional. But I agree,... 11 and 10 will be around for some time so there's no need to rush over to 12.

At this point none of us know what MS is up to and it's all speculation. I'll keep my powder dry until MS says something official

I have a new desktop and a new laptop. If I have to have a Pluton chip to run Windows 12, I'll have to wait a few years.

For now, all we can do is guess. I hope but I'm not sure, that MS knows what they are going to do.

I like to keep up, I don't very often have a new OS when it first comes out, I've only had that once when 7 came out. I may not be very knowledgeable about the ins and outs like a lot here but I do get by and can usually manage to keep my machines running without problems.

Like you though it has to fit in my budget and I only bought this laptop late last year so it will be a few more before I can afford another one, that's if I even want to by that time.

I am truly satisfied with eleven forums and I didn't expect a windows 12 this soon I guess nobody did .when windows 12 comes out I will update to it if it is free and has to have no special upgrades .but I am glad I have the 12 forums just in case and like every one else i will keep getting on the forum to see whats going on

Not just the budget but the ease of getting it, I wouldn't buy a new PC for 12 hopefully adapt one of the newer ones

Strikes me that as Pluton is supposedly going to get firmware updates via Microsoft updates, it is not in the CPU but a chip on the motherboard, CPUs, might have to have coding so they work with a pluton chip though.
And if it can be updated by Microsoft how can that be secure? Would be relatively easy I suspect for a hacker to fake a firmware update aimed at the click this without engaging brain club?
Probably things may be clearer when someone gets hold of an AMD 6000 CPU or whatever Intel comes up with, assuming they do!
Whatever, this security obsession is getting way over the top for people who just want to surf the net or play games and are not keeping state secrets on their computers.

It's the socket we need to worry about.
