What's new

Windows 12 - Microsoft starts work from March

No, it's not a typo. According to our information, Microsoft will start preparing for Windows 12 in March. In the run-up, they had already been looking for employees who would then provide additional support to the team. SwiftOnSecurity also confirms this information.

That doesn't mean that we'll see a new Windows 12 tomorrow. This can still drag on, since you start (almost) from scratch. One can assume that the Windows 10 substructure will then be completely abandoned. Windows 11 still has this substructure.

That means in plain English: What you started with Windows 10 X, to do everything new, is then really implemented in Windows 12. The latest changes in the Insider already show where the path is going. Leave old " camels " aside and only implement current things.

PS: The information from SwiftOnSecurity that two TPM modules are then required is of course a joke. But if you start now, also for the Pro, you need an internet connection and later also an MS account, you can already imagine in which direction things are going.

The core elements, some of which Microsoft has already launched with Windows 11 or will launch with the fall 2022 update (“22H2”), include:
  • Mandatory for Microsoft account in Home and Pro
  • An even stronger focus on TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot
  • Integration of the security chip “ Microsoft Pluton ”
  • Completely new substructure without the legacy
  • Take up approaches from Windows 10X

What I can't imagine is what the world will be like in 15 or 20 years time! Will we still have computers?! People thought laptops would die out when ipads came along and they didn't. Somehow I think we will always need keyboards.
Smart phones too. Everywhere I go people have therir noses buried in their smart phones.

So how about this for a theory?

Windows 12 will just be a 'Pluton-enabled' fork of Windows 11. If so, then it will share the same features and lifecycle, living (and dying) in parallel with Windows 11. If true, then that may in fact be good news for those running W11 on unsupported devices. It means that MS will have no need to pull the plug, just say that unsupported W11 can continue to get updates, but W12 cannot be installed.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other Systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Hi there
That's now but in the not to distant future a lot of high speed Internet can be delivered cheaply by satellite avoiding need for cabling etc in rural and remote areas.

Cheers
jimbo
Satellite is very expensive and way more unreliable.

I'm not so sure about that -- I remember even back as far as W7 you could get an OEM copy if you just bought something simple like a Mouse -- the OEM version was only around 5USD compared with around 100 USD for the retail so not really sure of the validity of your argument.
I never saw any version of Windows being sold for $5.00 no matter what device one bought. I remember the one time that we had to overpay to buy an update disk for Windows to fix their mistakes. The sales of MS and OEM products may not be a big cash cow, but it is a money maker.

Both my parents were avid silver surfers in their 80s. My Mother happily went from 7 to 10. My Father was reluctant to give up 7 and in his late 80s didn't like 10 - so he switched to an imac
God rest their souls, but my parents couldn't even set the time on the VCR let alone use a computer.

Yes indeed. I am trying to analyse it. Does Putin genuinely feel threatened by Nato expansion further into the East - or is he just wanting to put things back how they were before 1990. Whichever, it's an act of aggression.

I think you may be right - seems to be a personal thing between Ukraine President and Putin in something I read. Ukraine President locked up permanently, a friend of Putin's who is Godfather to Putin's daughter. And all kinds of political stuff from various people in Ukraine.

No, but then I doubt anyone will. Run a search and try to find a desktop CPU with the Pluton architecture. I could be wrong, but there are few out there (if any at this point).
I for one will not

Strange today with all the problems in Ukraine - MS stock and in general the NASDAQ closed remarkably higher -- without delving in to the dreadful politics there probably Ms is unaffected by it all. The market is still totally unpredictable and anybody who says the can get it right most of time is disemenating a whole load of "Bovine Scatology". Even the legendary Warren Buffet gets it wrong at times. !!

Cheers

All I can say is: "I hope they don't blow it with more disappointments!"
With the last Dev build, IMHO, they did exactly that.
