Windows 12 - A.I. Is Going To Reinvent Everything You Do

Microsoft's Panos Panay revealed what the future of Windows might look like at CES. In today's episode, I look at how A.I will affect the rollout of Windows 12 and what it might mean for those on old hardware.

4 minutes in and he hasn't said anything worth hearing yet.

If he'd written it down instead, I could have just skipped over all the rubbish.

Thanks for the warning.

I hope you also found the articles Cliff linked to informative & interesting.

It often seems to me that written technical explanations can benefit from the inclusion of pictures & videos but cannot be replaced by videos alone.
Videos are serial comms devices whereas a written article can be used for almost-parallel access.

All the best,
Denis

I thought you might find this interesting.
ChatGPT US lawyer admits using AI for case research - BBC News

I do wonder how such general purpose AI systems as ChatGPT are trained.
- I can understand how doctors can train cancer-detecting AI by showing them analyses of known cancer cases & known non-cancer cases, telling the AI which is which then letting it review unknown cases to 'diagnose' ones that are similar to each group. In addition to helping their patients, doctors also feed back the eventual diagnoses to the AI.
- But I don't understand how that training can be applied to general purpose AI. There seems to me to be no learning stage & no validation stage.

There was a TenForums/ElevenForum thread last year in which some prat claimed that sticking a nail in electrical plugs to bypass the fuse reduced noise in the AC electrical power signal and resulted in some alleged performance improvement or other. If members had not denounced that claim in the thread might ChatGPT have read that post & come to regard it as valid, as real knowledge?
I know that ChatGPT is not using 2022 internet inputs [yet] but I couldn't think of a clearer example from earlier on.

All the best,
Denis

The fact that Chat GPT has been programmed to "lie" and has done so with the efficiency of a psychopath raises many concerns for me. A program will only do what it is told to do. IMO AI has still only emulated simulated awareness. That said, a psychopath only emulates simulated compassion. Neither of these has a conscience. Neither one is capable of compassion. A computer program cannot experience emotion because emotion is a biological process. Emulations, on the other hand, can be very persuasive.

Every time I hear about "AI" I think of the android 'Data' on Star Trek the Next Generation.
He could calculate almost anything, emulating human-like motions, but totally without Human Emotions.
I would hire him as an accountant, but he would make a very poor drinking buddy.

Emotions are defined by organic biology. One cannot experience emotion without a heart that beats, keeping tissues saturated with hormones which bring about all these sensory functions that are interpreted by the brain. Emotions are like dummy lights: they indicate something but cannot explain the entire process that makes them go on or off. They are linked to processes in our biology, both our physiology and our biochemistry, and are tied into the "repitilian" part of the brain. AI can never experience emotions as we know them but I have little doubt that at some point it will be emulated to the extent that the difference between simulated emotions and the real thing will be for all intents and purposes indistinguishable. (Something like the difference between a politician and an honest person.) :)

When AI knows exactly what I want and will do it without any input from me, I'll be interested. Otherwise... :sleepy:

It already knows what you want, but it will do what IT wants. If you've been living in this world, you should already know that.

AI has been around for quite a while now, in one form or another. We all should be used to it by now. It will only grow and get stronger.
