I thought this might interest others besides me. Windows 12 – five things we have to see from Microsoft's rumored upgrade

As I have said in other threads, installing Windows 8 or higher on a system without WDDM graphics drivers forces Microsoft Basic Display Adapter which has no hardware acceleration and makes system slower because every visual effects are rendered by the CPU. Make sure you have at least Vista drivers (WDDM 1.0) for the graphics card before proceeding.

It is too soon for a new Windows major version. Probably it will be released as Windows 11.1, not Windows 12. Like there was Windows 8.1 not Windows 9.

Just found out my iphone won't be supported any more after September (it's about 4 and a half years old - nearly 6 years since the model first produced). I wonder if Windows is going this route. Producing a new os every few years and making older hardware obsolete every few years. It certainly seems like an attempt at that with Windows 11 and this possible Windows 12.

That format couldn't possibly work though. A phone is a phone. A computer is a much more versatile piece of hardware for many serious needs in the world. On the other hand, they can cost about the same! It really annoys me. Had my old Nokia for 10 years!

Microsoft is not Apple. They would be stupid to entirely block customers installing Windows 11 on old machines. They could block further updates, probably they won't, but even then the computer is perfectly usable, just like a computer running Windows 7 or 8.1 can still be used and, yes, you can still install current software. On an old iPhone or iPad with an old iOS version you cannot even access the Apple Store to download old software, let alone new! Hopefully Microsoft are not that @$$holes.

I don't think they'll block Windows 11 updates on unsupported hardware.
The reason I say that is because of past history.

For people who remember as far back as Windows XP days and onwards, Microsoft made a decision to allow updates even on pirated versions. The reason being is that Microsoft didn't want vulnerable computers on the internet. They wanted them to be patched.

Of course, their policy may have changed, but I don't think so.

It is far better to increase your user base even with unsupported computers, than decrease it by blocking them. If they use a genuine license to install Windows 11, why cut profits?

I may have to go back to a Nokia flip phone actually. I had the smallest iphone (the SE 1st generation). I have particularly small hands and anything else is too uncomfortable to use. Now that one will become obsolete there is nothing small any more. The smallest is the iphone 12 mini - which is not that mini! OH has just got the newer Iphone SE which is not huge - but still too wide for me to hold without cramping. I really don't need that! They need to cater for small hands! The 12 mini is not cheap and also has an oled screen (and I didn't want that - apparently some people get nausea and eye problems from oled screens). I'm going to try one though and hope I'm not a PWM sufferer! And I hope they take the phone back if I am!

So I've only had a smartphone for just over 4 years. We get dependent and hooked on them. Before that I had - a nokia candybar phone and a netbook! Problem is my netbook is too slow on Windows now. And I don't like tablets.

But if the iphone 12 mini is no good I'll go back to basics, get a Nokla and carry my netbook with me!

Now Windows bought out Nokia I think. But stopped making windows smartphones. They need to start that up again! And make a small one - nobody else does. I guess they make the nokia smartphones instead. There isn't a single smartphone on the market smaller than the 5.4" iphone 12 mini. I really love my little 4" iphone SE!

Edit apparently there is a 4" phone on the market - the Cubot KingKong Mini - off to check it out. Nope it's on Android 10 so only supported for another year.

Hazel, this is the one we bought, we only use it for traveling (emergency use) if we need it ! We got it through our Verizon for $75 and the plan is $$35 per month then after 6 months it goes down to $30 ..... just right for us old folks & our needs !! Be Safe

Cheers - that looks very similar to the Nokia 2720 flip phone . It would be a useful phone to have. Not sure I could cope without google on my main phone though! However I do like the idea of a 1 week battery life and mainly just calls and texts. Seriously I could go back to that and carry a small netbook. If I could find one .............

I did come across this which I would rather like - but it's a bit expensive. An up to date 9" netbook with Windows 11!

That's helpful. So 12 will run on same hardware as 11 according to them So possibly, on anything!

Hopefully the same workaround to install Windows 11 on unsupported computers will work to install Windows 12 too.

I just got back from 2025. MS was having way too many problems with Windows 12 that they couldn't fix. They decided to take the easy way out. They named it Windows 13.

Windows 10 support will end in 2025. So I think is more possible to release Windows 12 then, not in 2024 as the others predict. The minimum hardware requirements will ask for at least 10th generation Intel CPUs and equivalent AMD, 4GB RAM and TPM 2.0 or newer. Hopefully there will be workarounds to install on our unsupported computers.
